2021 World Wrestling Championship | Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers make early exit

Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers – Gyanender, Ravi and Sonu were all ousted ahead of the medal and draft rounds at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway on Friday. Gyanender was knocked out in the round of 16, while Ravi and Sonu were beaten in their qualifying rounds.

In the men’s 60kg event, Gyanender won his first fight of the day – after beating South Korean Jinwoong Jung 4-3 in the qualifying round. But, he was finally eliminated by the Japanese Ayata Suzuki in the round of 16.

On the other hand, Ravi lost by technical superiority the South Korean Jewoo Park in the men’s 97 kg event. Sonu also received a similar beating, with Bulgarian Radoslav Georgiev having the advantage in the 130 kg event.

None of the Indian wrestlers’ opponents made it to the semi-finals, so the Indians did not reach the repechage rounds. India has won just two medals so far in the current competition – Anshu Malik won a silver medal in the women’s 57 kg freestyle category, while Sarita Mor took a bronze medal in the women’s 59 kg freestyle event.

Sushil Kumar is the only Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships, when he took top honors in the men’s 66 kg event in 2010.
