American wrestler Gable Steveson wins gold in spectacular fashion at Tokyo Olympics


Olympic wrestler Gable Steveson may have had the most defining moment of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

On Friday, Steveson faced Georgian Geno Petriashvili in the 125 kilogram free category. He lost three points 23 seconds to go. He managed to score five points at the end of the allotted time to win the gold medal for the United States

He won 10-8.

It was the 21-year-old’s first Olympic gold medal of his career. He celebrated with an exceptional backflip.

Steveson outscored his opponents 23-0 in the first three rounds of Olympic competition. He beat 2016 Olympic gold medalist Taha Akgul of Turkey 8-0 in the quarter-finals and beat Mongolian M̦nkhțriin Lkhagvagerel in the semi-final before reaching Petriashvili Рthe No. 1 seed.

Petriashvili failed to capitalize on the three-point lead late in the game and was ousted by Steveson’s superb speed on the mat.

Steveson’s medal adds to his decorated amateur career.

He won gold at the 2021 Pan American Championships and 2017 World Junior Championships. He won gold at the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships for Minnesota. He also won gold at the Big Ten Championships in 2021 and 2020.
