Aydin Guttridge takes 2nd nationally in freestyle wrestling – Sports – Rockford Register Star

Aydin Guttridge, a former Eastern State champion who will wrestle at the University of Wisconsin starting next season, fought until the national heavyweight title fight at the Freestyle Wrestling Championships. USA this week, which ended with the finals on Tuesday afternoon.

And that was an Illinois heavyweight final.

Guttridge, the reigning IHSA Class 3A heavyweight state champion, lost 4-1 in the final in Fargo, ND to reigning state champion Luke Luffman from IHSA 2A, one step away from the national championship in its last youth / high school tournament.

“It was a great feeling to fight overall, but he’s now a triple (national champion) and he’s tough,” said Guttridge, who is now 0-4 against Luffman in his career.

But it was the closest match.

“Losses are always tough, but I’m closing the gap on him, and that will only make me better,” said Guttridge. “Now I’m hungry.”

Guttridge, who was 35-2 in his last season in high school while University of Illinois recruited Luffman was 33-0, could see more of Luffman in college because they will both face heavyweights in the Big Ten.

And Guttridge, who placed sixth at the National Freestyle Championships last year, has just kept improving.

“Aydin had a great tournament. He got sixth place last year, but this year he had his eye on the prize, ”Guttridge East head coach Gene Lee said in a phone interview from Fargo. “He’s so much better than he was just a year ago, and he’s had a great career at this level. He is one of the best to ever come out of the East. “

With Guttridge’s help, the Illinois team also won the national team title, and two girls from the area also made it to the Fargo National Championships. Sydney Manos of Stillman Valley took fourth place at 144 pounds in the 16U women’s freestyle class, while Roscoe’s Rose Cassioppi took seventh in the same class.

And they all still have a little business to deal with. The Greco-Roman nationals will start on Wednesday, where Guttridge and the others will once again aim for the national titles.
