Azerbaijani freestyle team wins European Championships in Budapest

Azerbaijan senior men’s wrestling team won first place in freestyle wrestling rankings of the 2022 European Wrestling Championships in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, this week.


The total number of awards for Azerbaijani wrestlers included one gold, four silver and two bronze won in seven different weight classes of freestyle wrestling.


Magomedkhan Magomedovich won the gold medal for the country in the 97 kg category. Aliabbas Rzazade, Haji Aliyev, Ashraf Ashurov and Abubakr Abakarov won the silver medals in the 57 kg, 65 kg, 79 kg and 86 kg categories respectively. Turan Bayramov and Osman Nurmagomedov won bronze in the 74 kg and 92 kg categories.


Azerbaijani wrestlers eventually scored 159 points to crown the European Championships, which brought together national teams from 28 countries. Turkish and Georgian athletes followed the national team of Azerbaijan in the team ranking of the tournament.


Budapest’s recent feat earned Azerbaijan’s senior men’s freestyle team a third European gold medal, winning the same award in 2009 in Lithuania and 2017 in Serbia.


Meanwhile, earlier in March, the country’s national team topped the team standings at the European U-23 Championship, which took place from March 7-13 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.


The ongoing 2022 European Championships in Budapest will end on April 3. It also includes Greco-Roman wrestling and women’s wrestling tournaments.
