Bulsak named Big Ten co-wrestler of the week


PISCATAWAY, NJ – Greg Bulsak (197) won Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week honors after his individual title at the 2021 Matmen Open. Bulsak went 4-0 in the tournament, which included a victory over No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi ( Pittsburgh) in the 197-pound title game.

Bulsak is the first Scarlet Knight to win a weekly Big Ten honor since current assistant coach Anthony Ashnault, who was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after defeating No. 1 Matthew Kolodzik (Princeton) on February 3, 2019 at Piscataway. Bulsak shares this week’s honor with Kyle Cochran of Maryland.

Bulsak beat Bonaccorsi – who entered the No. 2 ranked open in the country and finished second at the 2021 NCAA Championships – by a 3-2 decision in the Matmen Open final. Bulsak ended their tournament 4-0, which included two major decisions and a victory over 26th Braxton Amos (Wisconsin) in the championship semifinals. Bulsak dominated his four opponents 35-9.

Bulsak is 12-0 this season with a team record of six wins against ranked opponents.

With Bulsak dropping to No. 3 at 197 pounds according to Amateur Wrestling News, RU features three individuals ranked in the top five in their respective weight classes. Sebastien rivera (141), who also won individual honors at the Matmen Open, is ranked No.3, while Jean Poznanski (184) is No. 5. The trio is a combined 34-0 this season.

Rutgers hosts Indiana Friday at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The duel is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will air on Big Ten Network.
