With a number of new champions and All-Americans already crowned in boys and girls freestyle, we now turn our eyes to the Greco-Roman side of Fargo. The U16 tournament starts on Wednesday, while the Juniors start on Thursday. In this piece, we’re going to break down the juniors as 15 other wrestlers walk away with stop signs as national champions.

Just like in freestyle, we continued to see this medium shrink and shrink. At the regional level, we only had two champions. The first one including Brandon O’Brien from Iowa. O’Brien swept over the Northern Plains peloton where he also won in the freestyle. He just finished second in freestyle and will be a big favorite thereafter, becoming a Cadet All-American last year at 88.

The other regional champion is Cian Lasker of Nebraska who won first place at the Western Regional. Lasker should be the fresher of the two regional champions as he hasn’t wrestled in freestyle. Two other names to watch are Cael Keck, third in freestyle, and Noah Savageau of North Dakota, who was eighth in freestyle. The two will compete in Greco and showed solid upper body and floor work earlier in the week.

Finally, keep an eye out for Sage Mortimer from Utah. A year ago, Mortimer competed and became an American star in women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman and she is the top returning setter in the weight class. Could she become a double champion this time around and make history a bit?
