KARACHI: Wrestler Muhammad Inam rose to fame by winning the gold medal at the World Beach Wrestling Championship.
Inam beat Iranian opponent Pejman Fazlollah Tabar Naghrachi 2-1 in the senior category final to win the gold medal in the senior freestyle category in the -90 kg competition in Dalyan, Turkey.
The Pakistani wrestler had previously beaten Pavlidis Theodosios in the semi-final and Petridis Christos in the quarter-final – his two knockout opponents were Greek.
In the pre-quarterfinal bout, Inam beat Quintana Orozco of Mexico.
Previously, Pakistani Inayatullah won the gold medal in the cadet acrobatic -70kg category.
This is the fourth major gold medal for Mohammad Inam. He first came to prominence when he won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Last year, he won a gold medal at the Asian Beach Games held in Vietnam and the United States. South Asian Games in Guwahati.
Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) President Syed Aqil Shah praised the national heroes for making Pakistan proud.
“The leadership of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) has made every effort to promote wrestling and these gold medals are the result of years of dedication and visionary planning by the [PWF] management, ”Shah said.
“PWF is grateful for the support given by the Pakistan Olympic Association and the Pakistan Sports Board to the national wrestlers,” he added.
