James Lledo, Pittsburgh wrestler, makes his amateur MMA debut with 247 Fighting Championship

James Lledo, a standout collegiate wrestler from the University of Pittsburgh, will make his amateur mixed martial arts debut with 247 fighting championships this summer.

The “Brawl in the Burgh 12” fight is against Derrick Brown II and takes place on July 9 at the Hollywood Casino at The Meadows in Washington, Pennsylvania. Brown, a Philadelphia native, is also making his amateur MMA debut.

“We are incredibly excited for this match between James Lledo and Derrick Brown at Brawl in the Burgh 12,” 247 FC General Manager Hunter Homistek told MyMMANews. “Every time we bring a show to Pittsburgh, we want to give the crowd a little something extra to dig into – and I think this fight does just that.”

Lledo, who is training for the fight at Stout PGH, wrestled at Bala Cynwyd Middle School in Lower Merion, then wrestled at Lower Merion High School. At Lower Merion, Lledo posted a 130-27 record with 76 pins and as a senior won 38 of 42 games, with 28 victories ending in pins. He is a redshirt sophomore with the Pitt Panthers.

“James currently competes on Pitt’s wrestling team, so obviously he’s both a top athlete and a local draw for his hometown crowd,” Homistek said. “That said, Derrick wrestled in high school and he honed his stand-up skills to provide the perfect foil for Lledo’s skill set.”

Lledo competed full-time in the 2021-22 season, compiling a record 15 wins and 10 losses, competing in the 184 and 174 weight classes.

“What stands out the most to me is just how badly these two guys want to fight,” Homistek said. “Derrick was warned twice on this card, and both his opponents retired before James finally stuck. This means Derrick has literally signed three contracts against three different guys in no time to compete on this card. This guy is desperate to get in there and throw his hands up, and we love it.

Same for James. He was booked against another fighter, signed contract, before that fighter retired. We gave him the name Derrick (at a higher weight anyway) and he signed immediately. James and his family, friends and supporters couldn’t be more thrilled to make their debut, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce him to everyone at Hollywood Casino at the Meadows on July 9th.
