NDSU’s Brandon Metz wins National Greco-Roman U23 Championship
LINCOLN, Neb. – State of North Dakota Brandon Metz won the Greco-Roman United World Wrestling Under-23 National Championship on Thursday, May 27, and secured a spot on the United States squad for the Under-23 World Championships in November in Belgrade, Serbia .
Metz, a two-time NCAA Division I championship qualifier from West Fargo, North Dakota, has won all five of its games in the 130kg class. He beat Spencer Trenary of South Dakota State in the best of three championships with a first round victory by fall in 44 seconds and a 5-0 victory in the second round of league games.
Metz opened the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Colton McKiernan of SIU Edwardsville, then defeated Bowen McConville of SDSU 8-0 in the quarterfinals before a 4-1 win over Lee Herrington of Nebraska-Kearney in the half. final.
Three-time North Dakota State Heavyweight Champion for West Fargo High School, Metz was also a two-time National Greco-Roman Champion in the United States. He placed third at the UWW Greco-Roman Senior National Championships in May.
