NMU-trained Greco-Roman wrestlers win national titles

MARQUETTE, Mich. (NMU) –

Greco-Roman wrestler from Northern Michigan University National Training Site Peak Benji landed his first senior podium at the Senior Nationals this weekend in Coralville, Iowa.

Competing at 67kg, Peak dominated her opponents, outscoring them 46-0 in five matches. His performance also earned him the Outstand Wrestler Award for the competition.

In Peaks’ final game of the day, he faced Minnesota Storm’s Calvin Germinaro. Peak scored early with an out and a leg fault against Germinaro, earning four points. Peak earned four more runs with a pitch to win the game 8-0.

Winning a senior title for the third time in his career was Kendrick Sander. Sanders won the 77kg weight class by winning five matches, four of them on technical falls.

In his title match, Sanders faced World Team member Pat Smith of the Minnesota Storm. Sanders scored a four-point throw. He followed it up with two gut girls, improving his score by four more points, to win the match 8-0.

The NMU team also clinched an eighth-place finish from Duncan Nelson in the weight category of 67 kg. Nelson started the day strong, earning a 12-7 win over Ridge Lovett of the University of Nebraska. Nelson next faced number one seed Nolan Baker of Alpha Wrestling Academy, losing 0-4. This loss sent him to the consolation round, where he fought until the match for eighth place.
