Pride of Transcona named best wrestler in the world
Kenny Omega of Winnipeg was named the world’s best professional wrestler of 2021 on Pro Wrestling Illustrated annual list of the top 500.
This is the second time that the native of Transcona has been voted best player of the square circle. Omega, real name Tyson Smith, earned that honor in 2018 when he won the New Japan Pro Wrestling IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
The 37-year-old has enjoyed an unprecedented year, hosting world championships for All Elite Wrestling, Impact Wrestling and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Omega, the reigning AEW and AAA champion, has been the face of a searing AEW brand.
Omega is the longest reigning AEW champion in company history as he wears the belt since December 2, 2020 when he defeated Jon Moxley. AEW, which airs on TNT in the US and TSN in Canada, was founded by Jacksonville Jaguars co-owner Tony Khan in 2019. Winnipegger Chris Jericho was the company’s first world champion.
Since 1991, PWI – an internationally sold wrestling magazine – published its annual Top 500 list which bases the ranking on the record of wins-losses, success against the highest level of competition, influence, activity and talents in the ring. Over the years, names like Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, and John Cena have been ranked # 1.
