U17 Greco-Roman World Cup preview

Team USA has prepared 10 Greco-Roman athletes to make their World Championship debuts at the 2022 U17 World Championships in Rome, July 25-31.

Four athletes on the list have been two-time 2022 Pan American champions, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles, including Christian Castillo at 48kg, Zan Fugitt at 60kg, Joel Adams at 65kg and Koy Hopke at 110kg .

Hopke, a native of Amery, Wis., will represent Team USA in both styles. He owns a triple crown after winning national titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman in 2021.

He is joined by Castillo, who has also been on the world freestyle and Greco-Roman teams. He hails from Glendale, Arizona and was the 2021 USMC 16U National Finalist.

Also on the 2022 slate of two-time Pan Am champions, Fugitt, of Nixa, Mo., is committed to wrestling at Oklahoma State. Joining him is Adams of Omaha, Nebraska, who was named the top wrestler of the 2021 USMC 16U National Championships after winning the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles.

At 80kg, Cole Han-Lindemyer of Farmington, Minnesota is another athlete on the list who has found success on the international stage as the 2022 U17 Greco-Roman Pan American Champion and Freestyle Finalist.

Several athletes on the list made their presence known at the USMC Nationals in Fargo, ND, including Arvin Khosravy at 71 kg, Cody Merrill at 92 kg and Nick Treaster at 55 kg. Khosravy attends Chaminade College Preparatory in Woodland Hills, Calif., and was the 2021 champion at Fargo at 152 pounds.

Merrill is a California State Champion for Gilroy High School. At Fargo in 2021, he had a run in both styles, winning the Greco-Roman title and finishing second in the freestyle at 170 pounds.

At 55 kg, Nick Treaster of Newton, Kansas was a two-time Kansas State Champion and a two-time 2021 All-American at Fargo. Treaster signed up to fight in the Navy.

Davis Motyka at 45 kg and Elyle Francisco at 51 kg complete the Greco-Roman field. Francisco, of Anchorage, Alaska, placed third at the 2021 UWW Cadet Futures National Championships. Motyka attends Wyoming Seminary and was a 2021 USMC 16U National All-American, placing fifth in Greco-Roman. Additionally, he took fourth place at the U17 USMC US Open in Freestyle this year.

These ten athletes, coached by Steve Horton, LeRoy Gardner and Kyle Martin, will be looking to make their mark in Rome, Italy at their first world championships. The tournament will open with a Greco-Roman competition on Monday July 25, followed by the women’s freestyle on Wednesday July 27 and the men’s freestyle on Friday July 29.
