From the start of the opening bracket voting for the final, Wisconsin’s Dennis Hall was the overwhelming choice of fans as the top Junior Nationals Greco-Roman wrestler in the past 50 years of Junior Nationals.

Hall, a three-time Greco-Roman national junior champion, faced another three-time Greco-Roman national junior champion, Brent Metcalf of Michigan, in the final. When the voting ended, Hall won the final pairing hands down, 75%-25%.

Fans were asked to vote based on their national junior freestyle career only, and should not reflect their Greco-Roman successes, nor their college and international results.

Dennis Hall became a Greco-Roman specialist after his high school career, which included three Wisconsin state titles for Hartford High School. Hall won national junior Greco-Roman titles in 1987, 1988 and 1989. He was an Olympic silver medalist in 1996, a 1995 world champion and a world bronze medalist in 1994, one of the few American wrestlers to win a World or Olympic medal of each color. Hall made three American Greco-Roman Olympic teams. He went to Wisconsin as a freshman of college, then changed completely to focus on Greco-Roman the rest of his career. He also established himself as a leading Greco-Roman coach, working with athletes of different age levels.

Metcalf won four Michigan State high school titles for Davison High School. He competed in every style growing up, winning a USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown, then becoming a six-time Junior National Championship champion (winning three in Freestyle and three in Greco-Roman, competing in 2003, 2004, 2005) . Metcalf became a freestyle specialist after high school. His college career began at Virginia Tech and he followed coach Tom Brands to Iowa, where he won two NCAA titles and was a three-time runner-up. Metcalf has been on four senior US freestyle ski world teams and is now an accomplished assistant coach at Iowa State.
